GEDI Information Session: Discover a tool to show ethnic inequality in London. 4in10 (online) 7 March 2024

May 20, 2024

GEDI team members Professor Chris Lloyd and Professor Gemma Catney will deliver an online information session hosted by 4in10 (London's Child Poverty Network).

Title: Information Session: Discover a tool to show ethnic inequality in London

Date/time: Thursday 7 March, 11:00 to 12:00 (UK time)

Abstract: 4in10 is delighted to welcome scholars from Queens University Belfast who will share a groundbreaking tool for measuring inequality that can highlight the stark inequalities experienced by specific ethnic groups across London (and the rest of the UK) and be used by network members to demonstrate need and persistant inequalities.

While the Index of Multiple Deprivation can help show inequalities on all residents in a given residential neighbourhood. Professor Christopher Lloyd and Professor Gemma Catney have developed a new way of identifying ethnic groups and their risk of deprivation wihin a small geographical area.

These researchers from Queens University Belfast led an international team of researchers 'in creating the robust and novel methodology for uncovering inequalities not only between neighbourhoods, but also among different ethnic groups within those locations. Their Ethnic Group Deprivation Index (EGDI) uses the latest data from the 2021 Census of England and Wales.

The EGDI is a measure of deprivation for neighbourhoods for each individual ethnic group. The EGDI reports deprivation per neighbourhood and per ethnic group for overall deprivation, as well as by its constituent four domains: employment, housing, education, and health.'
